# How Burst works

Americans have roughly \$190B sitting in FSA and HSA accounts. Most of it can only be spent on things that are medically necessary. Plenty of what you sell can qualify, but only if a licensed clinician says so in writing. That document is a [Letter of Medical Necessity](/what-is-lmn), and Burst is the part that gets it written.

## What your customer does

#### Taps your link or scans your code

Your [Burst link](/where-link-goes), QR placard, or website badge opens your Burst page. No app, no sign-up.

#### Answers a few questions

They pick what they bought from you and answer a short health questionnaire.

#### A clinician reviews it

A licensed clinician in the Burst network reviews the request. That's our side, not yours.

#### Gets their letter

If they qualify, the letter is issued, usually within a day, and emailed to them.

#### Gets reimbursed

They file the letter and their receipt with their FSA/HSA administrator, or let Burst file it for them. See [How customers get reimbursed](/customer-reimbursement).

> Letters can't be backdated. A letter covers purchases made on or after the day the customer requests it, so the scan needs to happen the same day they buy. See [The in-store customer journey](/in-store-journey).

## What you do

Put your Burst link, QR code, or badge where customers already are. That's it. Customers pay the way they always do, with any card. See [Do customers need an FSA/HSA card?](/no-fsa-card-needed)

> Placement is the only thing that decides whether this works. Every merchant who says Burst did nothing for them has the same problem: the code or badge is somewhere customers don't look. See [Your first week](/first-week).
